No. 2 is illegal, 1 is legal, you’re just redirecting an image for a different private use. You’re not making money out of it.

Thanks for the zipper tutorial. I can make pretty much anyway but somehow skirt zippers always seem to trip me up. I have a hollow back and protruding round buttocks. Disaster for zippers.

Hi.. thanks for this info. I have a question.. If we buy a Hello Kitty stamp and make a greeting card and sell it, is it legal or illegal?

Hmmm, that’s an interesting one. Since you wouldn’t be selling the physical stamp block itself, I’m not sure. I did see someone mention once that if they’re selling the means to print your own Hello Kitty images (i.e. the stamp), then you would be within your right to sell what you’ve made with their product.

The issue would most likely be with trademarks: they can complain if you’re selling something called a “Hello Kitty greeting card” since they own the rights to the name Hello Kitty.

If I used fabric paint to paint hello kitty on a shirt but don’t sell it and use it for myself, is that illegal?

Technically any reproduction of a design/words/etc. that isn’t your creation is a copyright violation, and therefore illegal. However, not only is it unlikely you’d ever get “caught”, but it’s not like Sanrio would even give a rip if they somehow found out. They care about one thing: money. You didn’t sell it so they can’t try to claim that you owe them anything.

Thank you so much! So should I do it? I was actually thinking of making couples shirts, one with hello kitty’s face and one with dear daniel’s face for my boyfriend.
