Our newest interview is with a designer who gives her unique & feminine clothing a vintage twist. Meet Erika of Spicy Toast!!
Your Name: Erika Tryon
Age: 26
Hometown: San Diego, CA
Current Location: San Diego, CA
How did your interest in fashion begin? Oh gee, I was a wee little girly when I realized my love for clothing and fashion. I still remember from when I was 5, my favourite one piece shorts jumper! Sky blue and white striped stretch knit with a zipper up the center and flutter sleeve. I also remember quite vividly when my father washed the car with it!!!![]()
What motivated you to start selling your designs and what were your expectations when you started? I’ve always been complimented on my fashion sense. People seemed amazed by outfits i’d just put together from thrift store bargains, etc. ever since I can remember. So, I thought, I am sure if I designed my own clothes, people would buy them! I thought, lets give it a try, i’ve got nothing to lose!
Do you have any formal training in fashion, art or design? No, no formal training, it just flows through my bloodline!
Is Spicy Toast your primary job? Yes indeedy!
How many people are behind the scenes at Spicy Toast? Just Me!
What are some of the best and worst aspects of being an independent designer? The best aspect of being an independent designer is working for myself and being driven to create and utilize my imagination at work every day! The worst is…hummmm… the once in a while exhaustion from hours of hard work, attention to detail and dedication!
Where do you get inspiration for your designs? Everywhere!!! Fruit, old black and white classic films, runway, children, old folks, flowers, the moon, my imaginative desires…etc.etc.etc.
How would you describe your designs? Spicy Toast is something special. That happy spark in your eye. That extra reason to take a walk in the park.
Any advice for aspiring designers? Don’t be afraid. Never doubt yourself.
Do you have any interesting hobbies (outside of sewing/designing)? Yes, I am a jazz vocalist and i love to sing, it keeps me alive.

I remember that little jumper…Erika looked so adorable in it! (I’m Erika’s mother).
There is no end to Erika’s imagination and creativity…her special talents range from designing her own clothing to composing her own music and singing. Erika is a style all her own.
She’s one of a kind.
