How long have you been doing Babushka Designs?

I’ve had a shop on Etsy since July 2007. As I’m sure with many sellers of handmade things, it’s been a great learning process, from learning about what I do well, to savvy marketing to meeting new people and feeling like I’m part of a really great community. Sorry, I sort of went on a tangent. :P

Is it a full-time or part-time endeavor?

It’s a part time hobby-turned-business. Yes, business! I am the proud holder of a business license in San Francisco for my brand and budding business (I have my license ‘conspicuously’ hung by my desk). I have big plans. Hopefully they come to fruition. Baby steps!

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in everything. What the people around me are wearing, the colors and shapes that surround me, old movies and definitely my family and memories from my childhood. For example, one of my latest slipper styles I was inspired by the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. La-la-loved those books as a kid.

What is your favorite item you’ve ever made?

This yellow beanie is probably one of my favorite things I’ve made. Not so much because it’s the best thing I’ve made, but because I learned so much. I made this beanie without a pattern and had no clue what I was doing really. I was knitting it on size 8 circular needles, when I really should have been using a size 15… but it worked out! Also, my lovely model (aka, my roommate at the time) was a great model and this photo turned out great. I took it like 2 years ago and still use it as an ad today.

If you had a million dollars, what’s the first handmade item you’d buy?

This is a really hard question, so I would have to say, a handmade dress. Probably something like this because I’m really obsessed with Elizabeth I:
