How long have you been doing Funkey Monkey?
The Funkey Monkey brand was created a while ago to capture the concept of fun and what it means to be happy. We started the line to remind people about the importance of happiness, laughter, and spending time with the people who are closest to you. We have a historical love for cute, playful imagery and bright colors so from the beginning of the brand to today, a feeling of fun is always present in the products we make for the line.

Is it a full-time or part-time endeavor?
Promoting and selling the Funkey Monkey brand is our full time job. We sell online at The Brands Boutique.com plus, we attend fairs and conventions across California and participate in pop up shops in Los Angeles. You can also find our Funkey Monkey products in local boutiques and pop culture stores. We really enjoy what we do and are excited to see where the journey of independent business owners takes us!

What is your favorite item you’ve ever made?
Our favorite handmade item from the Funkey Monkey line is our Stuffed Felt Funkey Monkey Pillow. It’s super soft and ultra-fluffy. Plus, It’s made of brown felt and beige canvas. It is one of the first things we made after buying our new sewing machine and we’re so glad we did. We hand-silkcscreen the Funkey Monkey’s image onto the canvas and then fill it with a super airy stuffing. The pillows are really popular and we think it’s because they are so huggable!

Our favorite handmade items from our personal collection is our matching large tote bags. We used to use them everyday to carry books, groceries, lunches – basically, anything imaginable. They’re currently stashed away because of all the wear and tear they have underwent so we can’t offer a picture. But, that is definitely one of our favorite handmade item and the first one we completed on our Husqvarna Viking machine!

Where do you find inspiration?
Our inspiration comes from family, laughter, love, and happy moments with friends. Fun is the key to our inspiration and the brand is really a dedication to that person in everyone’s life who is full of energy and brings fun to every outing! The Funkey Monkey is the key to fun, which is why the brand is spelled combining the words fun and key instead of the traditional word funky. A lot of our inspiration also comes from our customers, who share stories with us about the people in their lives who remind them of a playful monkey. There are so many parents, siblings, friends, and relatives who have shared stories with us about the funkey monkey’s in their lives. These conversations and interactions with our customers offer us some of the best inspiration for developing the brand.

If you had a million dollars, what’s the first handmade item you’d buy?
A complete collection of Twinkie Chan’s crocheted goods. We love all her scarves and mittens! Plus, her food brooches are so cute. Our favorite is her Pear Scarf and Bacon and Egg Mittens. What is your favorite summertime activity?
Reading spy novels, watching black and white movies on the Turner Classic Movies station, and spending time out in the local gardens with family. The best thing about summer is the sunshine so we try to take in as much of it as we can by doing fun events outside!
