How long have you been doing Hiptronic Hoops?
I first started making and selling my first hula hoops in August of 2010, but didn’t really get things rolling on Etsy until December. The moment of online truth came when I designed and finally purchased my own business cards. After I placed the order and received the package of 500 Hiptronic Hoops business cards I realized that it was time to live up to what was printed on those little pieces of glossy paper!

Is it a full-time or part-time endeavor?
Right now I would say that it is in the midst of changing from one to the other. During the 2010 and 2011 I was going to school full-time, so hoop making came second. However, now I am taking the next steps to grow as a business and turn my hoop making into more than a self sustaining hobby. It is difficult to classify “part-time” or “full-time” when hula hooping and crafting is not just a job to me, but part of my lifestyle. For now I consider myself a full-time traveling bliss bunny and aspiring intergalactic hoopstar :D

Where do you find inspiration?
From other hoopers, of course! There are many great sources to tap into hooping communities not only locally but also on the web: Hooping.org, Fyeahhooping.tumblr.com. On Facebook I am part of several flow and hoop based groups that meet up in person on a weekly basis, and are constantly sharing info, videos and photos on the group wall. Likewise, on Tumblr I follow and am followed by many other hooping peoples who all share their creations, ideas, tricks, advice, etc. The circle is a symbolic shape representing community and friendship, and many hula hoopers actively embody that symbolism, and thus provide a cyclical source of inspiration!

What is your favorite item you’ve made?
NERD ALERT. My Final Fantasy White Mage Cloak. I know, it has nothing to do with hooping, but it was my first lengthy creative project. It was the reason why I learned to use a sewing machine. A lot of things I made in those early days of my craftsman ship weren’t very durable, but this one is still going strong six years later. (Although the hemming is sub-par). The first time I wore it was to Ohayocon, an anime convention in Columbus, Oh. Then I wore it for halloween twice after that. In fact, I think I’m going to dig it out of storage and rock it like a proud nerd at festivals this summer.

Hula-hoop-wise it would have to be my Fantastic Floral Hula Hoop.

 
 
If you had a million dollars, what’s the first handmade item you’d buy?
The Phoenix LED Hoop from Hoop-Daddy. It has a USB port and Bluetooth capabilities. It has 8MB of storage IN THE EFFING HOOP. You can create and download your own light patterns! It has over 100 LEDs in it and comes with over 200 patterns already! And a remote control to change the patterns from afar! The future is here and it comes in the form of a smart hoop! I was completely blown away when I saw someone use it in a YouTube video, and then I read the hoops specs from the Hoop-Daddy website. A-freaking-mazing.
 
What is your favorite book?
The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. I get something new out of that book each time I read it. It contemplates the Yin and Yang aspects of life, love, art and fate through a fictional romantic story. Is it better to have lightness or weight? Must is be, or could it very well just be otherwise? Are these events synchronistic or merely coincidence? I think it is easy to find aspects of the self hidden in each of the characters, and challenges you to see situations from multiple perspectives.
