Quick Tip: How To Keep Strawberries Fresh in the Fridge

Nothing says summer like fresh strawberries!

When strawberries are in season, I like to buy them by the boatload. The problem is, they don’t keep for very long.

That’s not a huge problem for me, since a lot of them wind up in the freezer for smoothies and milkshakes. But I like to keep some fresh for fruit salad, muffins, and for in my cereal, but it’s always only a day or two before they start getting mushy and moldy. And no one wants moldy strawberries in their cereal. No sir.

Enter the glass jar method! It’s so easy, it almost isn’t a trick, but I didn’t know about it for a long time, so I figured other people wouldn’t either.

Put unwashed, uncut strawberries in a glass jar. Seal and refrigerate. That’s it! Your berries should stay fresh for at least a week.

The important thing is not to put any bruised berries in the jar. Save those for the freezer, and keep the good berries for the fridge.

If you notice condensation forming in the jar, wad up a piece of paper towel and put that inside the jar with the berries, and it’ll soak up the excess moisture.

If you tend to buy a lot of berries, get a large jar. The quart size mason jars won’t quite hold a pint of strawberries if they’re really big.

This works for other berries as well- blueberries, raspberries, blackberries… so don’t be shy about stocking up the next time you’re at the farmers market.

  1. If you give your berries a brief bath in a white vinegar and water solution, it kills off mold spores and will help them last even longer. Remember to pat dry gently, then glass jar it up.
Also, if you defrost frozen berries, you can still use them for dessert sauces, salad dressings, ice cream, etc. And jam!

  2. This helped me so much!! Never knew or even thought of something like this but like others, always ended up throwing out more fruit that I ate lol. Thank you!

  3. Great to no I have been so frustrated this year especially. Seems no fruit especially strawberries don’t last long. Also grocery stores are outting old grapes old berries in with the new ones and that’s another reason they don’t last thanks
