I’ve been experimenting with frankensteining recycled sweaters into these swirly twirly coats. So here are the first two SmarmyClothes fairytale sweater coats, hot off the press:
Wow, I never thought that bits and pieces of sweaters could be made into such elegant-looking coats. The black one definitely makes my inner gothy teenager squeal with delight! š
Just wanted to say again how awesome these are! I hope you’ve got plans to make lots more.
I went to a ugly sweater party this year around Christmas, and now I’m thinking how epic it would have been to have one of these made out of the ugliest sweaters ever. Maybe I should have my mom ship her collection of Christmas sweaters to me…hmmm…..
Did you sew it with a serger or a zig-zag stitch? I’ve been wanting to do some sweater refashions but I can’t figure out a way so that the seams don’t unravel. I don’t want to felt the sweater either! Can you give me any tips? Thanks!
I used a serger, but I think it could work with a tight zig zag stitch. It might work best to do a straight stitch, leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance, and then going back over the seam allowance with the zig zag.
Been looking up tutorials on doing the same, but holy flipper doodles I’m crushing on your so much. I love them they came out great, total inspiration for me to make one for my daughter thanks
I am in love with your designs .. I am a 50 year old woman and I just adore these .. I am not into renaissance or fairie looks, I just love love love your red and black Queen of Hearts !! Not only does this work for me personally but it is also our school colors !! I an now on the hunt for sweaters of the same shade of red so that I can make one !! Thank you so much for the inspiration, design and different colors. And Even though it may be awhile before I find enough material, I will post my pics …
The sweaters were all mixed. Most were synthetic (or mostly synthetic.) If you use wool (or mix in wool with other fiber content), you’ll of course want to keep that in mind when washing.
They are very, very heavy. 8-10 lbs per coat.

Do you make these to sell to people my wife and daughter would love these
Hi Corey-
I no longer make these to sell. Thanks for your interest, though!
What fabric are the sweaters used? Does it have to be wool or can it be acrylic? About how much does it weigh(queen of hearts)?
